Alaska Star was in for annual maintenance recently and is all set to shine during a summer of cruising in the San Juan Islands and beyond. The boatyard crew at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard hauled out the Westport 48 and sanded and prepped her for bottom painting.
The cruiser is owned by four Alaska Airlines pilots, a few of whom were at the boatyard earlier this month to get her annual maintenance under way. It was hard to miss (and pass up) one co-owner’s exuberant black Lab pup bouncing around near the boat. Naturally, I had to go introduce myself — and meet the owner, too.

Co-owner Samantha Cassino, a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines, was on dog duty next to where the Westport was up on stands in the yard. She and her husband, one of the pilots, were there seeing to things on the boat. She said two of Alaska Star’s owners live in Gig Harbor and the other two live in the north end of the Seattle area. The boat is kept here in Gig Harbor. How do you have it worked out to share the boat, I asked? Simple.
“We have a schedule and we each get the boat for one week a month,” she said. “We go to the San Juans every summer, and this year we’re going to Desolation Sound.”
Come to Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard for your boat’s annual maintenance and get her ready to shine this cruising season.
