~ Judson Street near the historic waterfront ~
The 32nd annual Summer Art Festival is coming to town July 16 & 17 in the heart of historic Gig Harbor. More than 120 fine artists and crafters will show and sell their work on Judson Street, which is open to foot traffic only for browsing among the dozens of booths of beautiful wares. There will be live music, food vendors, a literary corner for authors and illustrators, children’s activities and an art exhibit by Peninsula Art League members.
Lindsey Shaw from Gig Harbor High School created the illustration used on Art Festival promotional materials this year. She calls her painting “Harbor Leisure.”
The Gig Harbor Summer Art Festival, organized by the Peninsula Art League, was voted Best Festival in the Region by readers of South Sound Magazine in 2012 and 2013.
Proceeds from the Art Festival provide art scholarships for local students and Peninsula Art League members. Proceeds are also shared with the Gig Harbor community and out-of-town visitors through our art shows, workshops and programs.
Everyone is an Artist at ‘Chalk the Harbor’
On Saturday, July 16, children, families and adults are invited to decorate the sidewalks of Gig Harbor’s downtown waterfront during “Chalk the Harbor,” sponsored by the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance. The Alliance provides free chalk along with certificates of award in the following categories: Kids, Family, High School, College Students, Adult, Group and Best Maritime/Nautical art.
Participants are encouraged to bring a chair or knee pads for their artistic endeavor. A maritime theme is encouraged, though not required. Chalk the Harbor is a fun, FREE, family event. Harbor WildWatch will be at Skansie Brothers Park with their touch tanks and face painting will also be available.
Register on the day of the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at either Skansie Brothers Park on Harborview Drive or the Anthony’s parking area in the Finholm District on N. Harborview Drive.
Enjoy the art throughout the downtown by riding the “Get Around Gig Harbor” Pierce Transit Trolley. Cost is 50 cents each ride, or ride the whole day for only $1. Plan to hop off at the stationary red trolley in town, JW @ the Boatyard, at the entrance to Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard, and have a bite of lunch at the marina. You won’t be able to miss the tantalizing aroma of fish & chips, calamari, chicken sandwiches and other Northwest favorites.
The Peninsula Art League welcomes Timberland Bank as the new primary sponsor of the Summer Art Festival.
Chalk the Harbor is sponsored by Peninsula Light Company. For more information call 253-514-0071.
