Bottom Paint Sets Cruise Season

Bottom paint, Matt Betancourt

It’s perfect weather for bottom paint, so come see us at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard. Bring your boat in and Doug, Mark or Matt from our paint shop will get you ready for cruising season. Come on ~ the water is calling!

Prep for bottom paint

Doug Terrian, lead painter at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard, applies marine fairing compound to the hull of an Erickson 35 Mark III. The underwater Bondo makes for a very smooth hull for the racing sailboat once it is sanded. It’s all part of the process for creating the smoothest body possible before applying fresh bottom paint, said Terrian.

“This will make a very smooth hull,” he said as he worked on Windchaser, a regular competitor in the Thursday night sailboat races in Gig Harbor. “I’m trying to smooth everything out. It dries fast and you can sand it out and be ready for bottom paint.”

Bottom paint

Matt Betancourt, from the paint shop at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard, applies bottom paint to Osprey, a stately sailboat in the yard recently. Matt applied two coats of black West Marine ablative anti-fouling paint. Osprey glided away from the boatyard after just a few days on the paint stands. Just in time for some warm weather cruising over the weekend. Ahhhh, it doesn’t get better than this.
