Candlelight Christmas Aglow in the Harbor

Come “Experience the Magic of Christmas on the Downtown Waterfront.” That’s the yuletide message from the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Association as it kicks off its annual Candlelight Christmas in the Harbor festivities this weekend.
The holiday season got under way on Dec. 5 with the community Christmas tree lighting in Skansie Brothers Park, next to Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard. That’s just the beginning of many fun and festive events along the Gig Harbor waterfront that are sure to make the season merry and bright.

Join the fun this Thursday, Dec. 10 for the 2nd Annual Ugly Sweater Contest – “Get Your Ugly On!” Meet at 6 p.m. in front of the Christmas tree in Skansie Brothers Park for photos, judging and awards.
Be sure to take part in the Holiday Hayrides with Santa on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11 and 12, loading at Timberland Bank on Judson Street from 4:30- 7:30 p.m.. Refreshments will be served by the friendly Timberland Bank staff in the lobby. Be sure to dress warmly, as the long-range forecast may just include snow!
The Gig Harbor Yacht Club’s annual Lighted Boat Parade will take place on Saturday, Dec. 12, beginning at 5 p.m. Come enjoy the dazzling decorated boats as they slowly circle the harbor, and maybe even make a dinner reservation at a favorite waterfront restaurant to ensure good viewing of this popular event.

“Hark the Harbor” on Sunday, Dec. 13 is a fun family event where you can join in community caroling while awaiting the arrival of the Argosy Christmas Ship. This is the 6th year the Downtown Waterfront Alliance has sponsored this event, which starts at 5:45 p.m. at the pavilion in Skansie Brothers Park . Sharon Stearnes, former staff organist for Tacoma Pizza and Pipes and the Seattle Mariners, is a wonderful family-oriented entertainer who will lead the singing of traditional and contemporary carols. The Waterfront Alliance will provide songbooks and candles.
In spite of it being his busy time of year, you might even find Santa Claus joining in the fun. At 6:35 p.m. the caroling will end as the Argosy Christmas Ship makes its appearance, all aglow in festive lights. The Olympia Youth Choir, Cantabile, will be on board to perform for your listening pleasure.

Throughout December come downtown and enjoy the fifth year of the “Deck the Harbor-Window Decorating Contest.” Enjoy the talent and creativity of downtown waterfront businesses as windows are transformed into beautiful and holiday-inspired works of art. You may vote for your favorite window through Dec. 31.
