USMA-Logo (Medium)A “captain’s license” is a license issued by the U.S. Coast Guard that allows you to professionally operate a vessel that carries passengers or cargo for hire. There are several types of licenses issued by the Coast Guard to professional mariners. The two most common entry level licenses are the OUPV (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels – commonly called a 6-pack) license and a Master Mariner’s License.

The USCG “Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels” captain’s license issues the authority to operate a small (less than about 65 feet) power-driven vessel carrying six or fewer passengers for hire, not counting the operator or crew, thus the term “6-pack.” This is the most common captain’s license held by fishing guides and the operators of small charter boats.

Master Mariner’s licenses are categorized in several ways. Among these are tonnage and area of operation. With a Master Mariner’s License you are able to operate both uninspected and inspected vessels up to the tonnage printed on your license.

To reserve a seat for the free orientation on Oct. 3, it is advised that you register today on the Northwest Maritime Academy website. RSVPing for this introductory evening does not commit you to the course; it only reserves your seat for the free orientation session.
