Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard for haulout and collision repair

After your summer of cruising, Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard is where you want to take your boat for repairs on those little, ahem, mishaps, that are just part of spending time on the water. Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard, the only full-service haulout and marine service and repair facility in the harbor, employs its 50-ton metric Travelift, operated with meticulous care and precision on each haulout by dock master Mark Rybin, who has been with the marina for 35 years.

The Travelift, which can handle boats up to 100,000 pounds with approximately 11 feet of draft — depending on the height above water, says boatyard manager Mark Lindeman — is used several times a day at the busy downtown boatyard. Rybin carefully positions the wide straps under the hull in the lift bay and then starts lifting the boat out of the harbor with his yellow remote control box, walking around and watching from all angles every step of the way. With the boat securely cradled high in the air, Rybin starts the behemoth Travelift rolling forward to waiting blocks on blue tarp where the boat will sit solidly braced during its service and repair by the skilled boatyard crew.

That was the routine when Denny Rohr of Fox Island, Wash., brought his 34-foot Tollycraft, Karma, to Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard for haulout and repairs after hitting a log off the east coast of Vancouver Island, B.C., this summer. “We limped back from Ladysmith Harbor,” he said, shaking his head while watching dock master Rybin and the Travelift expertly haul Karma out for inspection.
A diver in Canada thought the damage on his 1976 Tolly Sedan might be a cutlass bearing, Rohr said, and he was right: Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard’s service team replaced the damaged cutlass bearings on both propeller shafts and removed the bent propellers and installed the owner’s spares. After his service at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard, boat-owner
‘Rohr is feeling the joy of “good Karma” again.

An elegant Carver 530, Eagle, out of Gig Harbor, is also at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard for end-of-summer collision damage repairs and other maintenance. After lifting the stately 53-foot boat out of the harbor, Travelift operator Rybin settled Eagle on the yard atop sturdy blocks and positioned several stands under her hull to brace the boat during service and maintenance. The marine service and maintenance crew at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard will take care of collision damage and finish up with bottom paint, says yard manager Lindeman.

The yard crew will remove Eagle’s steering gear and rudders, then replace the rudder shaft seals and reinstall all, says Lindeman. “We’ll inspect for hidden damage and repair it as necessary,” he added.
