Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard Gets Rave Review

Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard has many satisfied customers these days. So satisfied was one happy boat owner recently that he sent the following rave review to the downtown boatyard.

Jon and Sue Duncan of Tacoma had their sailboat Hav Vind hauled out and serviced at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard this winter and they couldn’t be happier with the result. Their striking C & L 36 Explorer was in for complete engine and sail drive replacement and bottom painting.  Now they “wouldn’t think of entrusting (their) good old boat to anybody else,” said Jon in an email to Mark Lindeman, boatyard manager at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard.

Rave review for engine and sail drive replacement

“Hav Vind” last visited Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard 15 years ago before it’s haulout this winter. The cruising sailboat was at the boatyard for complete sail drive and engine replacement and bottom paint.

Hav Vind, Danish for ‘sea wind,’ was “in for everything, ” Jon said as he watched Travelift operator Mark Rybin set the sailboat down on the hard a few months back. The experienced mechanics and shipwrights at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard soon took care of the cruiser’s sail drive installation and other service needs. They removed the old MD 17A sail drive and engine and replaced it with a new, modern Volvo engine and sail drive. The 1983 boat designed by Stan Huntingford now has a new Volvo D2-40 diesel engine and sail drive, and left the boatyard with a perfect coat of bottom paint.

Rave review for marine service and repair

Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard got a rave review from sailboat owner Jon Duncan of Tacoma. His C & L 36 Explorer was “in for everything,” he said when he dropped the cruiser off for service and repair.

The Duncans last had Hav Vind hauled out at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard about 15 years ago, and were pleasantly surprised at the changes at the downtown boatyard since then. They will be returning much more regularly for service from now on, Jon emailed to Lindeman:

Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard Gets Rave Review from Satisfied Customer

“Mark, I want to thank you and the rest of your hard-working crew there at Gig Harbor Marina & Boat Yard for doing such a good job on re-powering my sailboat. Hav Vind runs beautifully and we are looking forward to the upcoming boating season.

“As I already related to you, I had not hauled out in Gig Harbor for a long time. I was pleasantly surprised and pleased to discover how much the yard has been upgraded. The work site was clean, well-managed and secure throughout our layover. It is a great relief to know that now I don’t have to motor to Seattle or Olympia to haul out.

“Of course, any service business is only as good as its people. All of the people that I had the pleasure of meeting during our layover were knowledgeable, pleasant and eager to help. In particular, I want to acknowledge “bald Doug,” the mechanic who, despite freezing weather and personal health issues, worked so hard to install our new engine. He knows his stuff. More importantly, Doug takes pride in his work and can be counted on to do the job right. He is an asset to your business and you will do well to take good care of him.

Sail drive and engine replacement

The crew at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard replaced “Hav Vind’s” sail drive and engine.

“It’s good to have Hav Vind back home in her mooring slip where I can show off my new engine to all of my marina buddies. Rest assured, we will be back for scheduled service. I wouldn’t think of entrusting my good old boat to anybody else.”

— Jon Duncan, owner of Hav Vind.
