A handful of enthusiastic souls “got their ugly on,” as the Alliance tagged the event, and braved the day’s heavy rain and gathered in their sweater finery for judging on Thursday evening. Karrie Polinski, manager of Tickled Pink, won for Overall Ugliest Sweater and proudly pirouetted in her tinsel garland-trimmed sweater to the applause of other contestants.

Other categories were Best Kid, Most Festive, Funniest and Traditional ugly sweater. Winners received gift cards from the Tides Tavern, a mug and hot cocoa packets and spiffy sweater ornaments and buttons.

“Hark the Harbor” on Sunday, Dec. 13 is a fun family event where you can join in community caroling while awaiting the arrival of the Argosy Christmas Ship. This is the sixth year the Downtown Waterfront Alliance has sponsored this event, which starts at 5:45 p.m. at the pavilion in Skansie Brothers Park . Sharon Stearnes, former staff organist for Tacoma Pizza and Pipes and the Seattle Mariners, is a wonderful family-oriented entertainer who will lead the singing of traditional and contemporary carols. The Waterfront Alliance will provide songbooks and candles.

At 6:35 p.m. the caroling will end as the Argosy Christmas Ship makes its appearance, all aglow in festive lights. The Olympia Youth Choir, Cantabile, will be on board to perform for your listening pleasure.
