Gig Harbor Water Sports Opening Soon

Water Sports opening

Things are beginning to take shape at the new Gig Harbor Water Sports store moving in at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard.

The new store, devoted to all things for having fun on the water, is getting into shipshape ahead of its grand opening, set for Nov. 4 and 5.

Gig Harbor Water Sports, a branch store of the Gig Harbor Fly Shop just up Harborview Drive, is moving into the marina retail space previously occupied by The Queen’s Cabinet boutique. Store associates are excited about the opportunity to offer a shop where everything is watercraft related.

“We’re most excited about this expansion because it helps us distinguish between the two stores,” said Fly Shop associate Kipp Godfrey. “The great thing about it is now we are established as a water sport-specific shop, and by virtue of that we can offer more and increase our sales. The Fly Shop isn’t always where you think to look for kayak rentals or sales.”

The grand opening of Gig Harbor Water Sports at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard is set for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4 and 5, and will feature speakers from Hobie and Native Watercraft, giveaways and other great deals.

Gig Harbor Water Sports will offer a variety of kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, and water sport apparel and other gear by brands such as Patagonia.  They will carry kayaks by Hobie, Native Watercraft and Hurricane Kayaks, from standard to deluxe fishing models. Their pro angler series kayaks are designed to be fishing-specific and are so stable you can stand up and walk around on them, Godfrey said.

“That being said, we’ve had people who have purchased these kayaks just for their stability alone,” due to the ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam inside, he added.

The store will also sell Werner paddles made in Sultan, Wash., and a variety of youth to adult personal flotation devices — from standard to inflatable, from basic to some that are more technical, Godfrey said.

Gig Harbor Water Sports is an exciting prospect for Bryant Hawkins, who recently relocated to the Gig Harbor area from New Orleans. He will manage the new store, and “it’s going to be a blast,” he said.

“It’s going to be exciting,” he said. “We’re going to bring in more of the lifestyle side of things with the Patagonia wear. We’re looking to outfit people who want to be out on the water for a while.”

The new store will also offer more kayaks for rent, and more of a variety of rental kayaks, Hawkins and Godfrey said.

“The great thing is that now we have the space to expand our fleet of rental SUP’s and kayaks,” Godfrey said. “We’re very excited about that. This will actually be the first year that we will offer standard SUP’s. Last year we picked up the foot pedal-driven SUP, the Hobie Eclipse.”

“We’re just excited for this new opportunity,” he added.
