Junior Sail Puts Kids on a Good Heading

Junior Sail

Public is Invited to Annual Dinner & Auction Sept. 21

The GHYC Junior Sail Program is bigger and more popular than ever. It has caught that lift so sought after by sailors, filling its sails with energy, enthusiasm and enrollment. Much more enrollment.

After 10 years of relative calm, the learn-to-sail day camp offered by GHYC Junior Sail served more kids than ever during the summer of 2018. This summer’s sail camp sessions in Gig Harbor bay drew more than 200 kids, a huge increase from under 100 youth just a few summers ago — and that’s not counting the many teenagers involved with the program’s competitive and very successful high school racing team. Plus, new this fall, is the addition of a middle school racing team to the sailing program.

Junior Sail

Kids learn water safety, sailing fundamentals and respect of the aquatic environment in the Junior Sail Program.

GHYC Junior Sail is run by a dedicated and hard-working board of volunteers in loose affiliation with the Gig Harbor Yacht Club. Now the group is gearing up for its annual fundraising evening and the public is invited to attend.

Make plans to attend this enjoyable evening dedicated to providing area youth, ages 6-18, with a fun, healthy, dynamic activity. Each year the youth sailing program is able offer several scholarships making Sail Camp possible for even more kids thanks to donations made at its fundraising event.

The GHYC Junior Sail spaghetti dinner and auction is set for Friday, Sept. 21, at the Gig Harbor Yacht Club, 8209 Stinson Ave., in Gig Harbor. The doors open at 5:30 for a social hour with beverages, appetizers and silent auction, with dinner and a program beginning at 7 p.m. Cost is $20 per person through reservations made at GHYC Junior Sail Auction or $25 at the door, depending on space available. Join Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard in Supporting the Junior Sail Program

Each year the board sets fundraising goals for much-needed equipment, vital for keeping the program afloat. Last year, thanks in large part to generous donations by Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard, Junior Sail was able to purchase a new rigid-hulled inflatable boat, or RIB, for coaching.

This year, Junior Sail has its sights set on raising funds for new Opti sailboats, to be used for instruction and racing, and a new trailer for hauling FJ sailboats to racing regattas. Come raise your paddle for these needed items, plus make donations for scholarships to help kids attend Junior Sail Camp.
