Sail Drive Installation a Breeze at Gig Harbor Marina

Sail drive installation is complete on Hav Vind, a striking C & L 36 Explorer in for service at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard. The cruising sailboat also has a new engine and a fresh coat of bottom paint.

Owners John and Sue Duncan of Tacoma brought Hav Vind  — Danish for “sea wind” — to Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard for a complete engine and sail drive replacement and bottom painting. “It’s in for everything, ” John said as he watched Travelift operator Mark Rybin set the sailboat on the boatyard in December.

The experienced mechanics and shipwrights at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard soon took care of the cruiser’s sail drive installation and other service needs. They removed the old MD 17A sail drive and engine and replaced it with a new, modern Volvo engine and sail drive, said Mark Lindeman, boatyard manager at Gig Harbor Marina.

The 1983 boat designed by Stan Huntingford now has a new Volvo D2-40 diesel engine and sail drive, as well as a perfect coat of bottom paint.

The Duncans last had Hav Vind hauled out at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard about 15 years ago, and were amazed at the changes at the downtown boatyard since then.

“Wow, there have been a lot of improvements here,” said John when he brought his boat over just before the New Year. “The last time we were here it was a gravel lot,” he added as he gazed around the busy, blacktopped boatyard.

Just a bit more touch-up painting left to do and Hav Vind will be ready to be back out sailing in the sea wind.
