Fun Harbor Happenings Set for Summer

With our prolonged winter finally behind us — please, Mother Nature, we’ve been good — we can at last imagine a season of warmth returning to the harbor….when we get to trade our snow shovels and layers of fleece for kayak paddles and flip flops.

To help nudge this happy time along, we thought it would be fun to list the lineup of warm weather happenings planned for the harbor. Summing is coming, folks. So, put down your ice scrapers and grab the sunscreen — and don’t forget those paddles!

8th Annual Paddlers Cup Regatta

April 27-28, 2019 ~ Skansie Brothers Park

harborThe Gig Harbor Paddlers Cup is the premier event for Pacific Northwest canoe, kayak, paddleboard and outrigger athletes and enthusiasts of all ages and levels.

Organized by the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team, this annual community event features paddle racing for kayaks, canoes, stand up and prone paddleboards, outriggers and para-canoes, and dragon boat races.

Harbor Race Series

Starts May 2, 2019

summerThis fun but competitive sailing race series runs every Thursday evening in Gig Harbor bay.

The Harbor Race Series is organized by the Gig Harbor Yacht Club and draws many local sailors for an enjoyable evening of friendly competition around marks set in the harbor.

The racing fun continues past May and lasts all summer — all comers welcome.

Armed Forces Day

May 18, 2019

flagArmed Forces Day, established back in President Truman’s tenure, is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. It is a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces.

In honor of our military’s patriotic service to the country, Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard will raise its flag for the summer season.


Maritime Gig Festival

June 1-2, 2019 ~ Along the Downtown Waterfront

Park reopenedThe Maritime Gig Festival is Gig Harbor’s annual summer kick-off celebration of the community, highlighting the rich history, traditions and economic vitality of the area.

So, avast ye, mateys! Yo-ho parades, pirates, pancake breakfast, live music, dancing and a bounty of fun awaits ye.

The traditional Blessing of the Fleet by clergy from St. Nicholas Catholic Church is June 2.

Waterfront Farmers Market

Opening Day June 6, 2019 ~ Skansie Brothers Park

summerVisit the Waterfront Farmers Market every Thursday from 1-7 p.m. through the end of August.

Enjoy enticing booths of locally grown produce, freshly caught seafood, farm-raised meat, local honey and beautiful flower bouquets.

Organized by the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance.

Marine Swap Meet on National Marina Day

June 8, 2019 ~ Second Wave Marine Repair & Consignment


Get ready for the Swap Meet @ Second Wave. Set up a booth in the parking lot and sell your gently used boating and other water recreation stuff, or just come and browse the array of goods for sale.

This day of fun, food, music and marine treasure takes place at the Second Wave Marine Consignment store at 3720 Harborview Drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call Jenn at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard to reserve your $10 space, (253) 858-3535.

Summer Sounds at Skansie Concert Series

Tuesdays, End of June to Mid-August

summerThe annual Summer Sounds at Skansie Concert Series brings live music to the waterfront on Tuesday evenings from the end of June through mid-August.

Keep checking the above link to the Gig Harbor Guide for the start date and lineup of bands set to take the outdoor stage every Tuesday from 6:30-8 p.m. Then make plans to stake out your lawn chair and enjoy hot summer sounds on the harbor.

Gig Harbor Summer Art Festival

July 20-21, 2019 ~ Judson Street, Near the Waterfront

summerArtists and crafts people from throughout the Northwest will have their beautiful wares for sale at the Peninsula Art League’s 35th annual Summer Art Festival.

The festival also features live music, food vendors, a literary corner for authors and illustrators and lots of kid friendly art-making activities. As always, a free shuttle bus will run to and from the festival site.

During the festival, all ages can express their inner artist with creative Chalk the Harbor chalk drawings along the waterfront business district.


The Trolley @ the Boatyard serves up delicious Northwest fare in the heart of downtown Gig Harbor.
