Enjoy beverages and hors d’oeuvres while listening to guest speaker Leslie Mayne, the founder of the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation, whose mission is to inspire hope and action in the community and provide access to solutions for soldiers and their families affected by post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. The foundation offers professional services, challenging peer adventures, education and spiritual devotion, according to its website.

“Right Arm Night” is an Army tradition where the commander takes his or her “right hand” staff person to the club to have a drink and share the challenges and victories of the week, says John Guardia of the Meriwether Lewis-Gig Harbor chapter of AUSA.

“It was a way to build camaraderie and it gave us a chance to get to know each other outside of work,” he added, in an email explaining the upcoming event at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard. “The way I see it here, the community is the “Right Arm” to our military. Eventually, all military members will transition back into civilian life, so why not start building those relationships now.”

At the Feb. 17 “Right Arm Night” at The Club @ the Boatyard, the civilian community will be able to meet and learn more about the military members it supports, and the military will be able to meet potential future business partners, mentors or transition coaches, Guardia explained.

The local chapter of AUSA plans to host a “Right Arm” event on a quarterly basis as a way of “building relationships and opening opportunities for members to volunteer in the community,” Guardia said. Their big event will be this August when they host the 201st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord for their Military Appreciation Day.

“Last year we had over 2,000 people at this event,” said Guardia. “It was a great event thanks to the City of Gig Harbor, the Chamber of Commerce and PenMet Parks. This year we want to make this more of a local event by inviting local businesses to participate by sponsoring various activities.”

But first, mark your calendar to attend “Right Arm Night” at The Club @ The Boatyard on Feb. 17 and learn more about partnering and supporting military members.
