Why Gig Harbor Runs for a Soldier

Every autumn, a distinct energy fills the air in Gig Harbor. You feel it early in the morning near the Tom Taylor YMCA – hundreds of runners lacing up shoes, volunteers setting up water stations, and a community coming together around something far bigger than a weekend road race.

Race for a Soldier, hosted by the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation(opens in new tab), isn’t just an annual athletic event. It’s a powerful movement rooted in healing, honor, and hope.

Founded by Leslie Mayne after losing her son, Captain Kyle McNally, to the invisible wounds of war, the foundation was born out of personal tragedy. What started as a mother’s determination to turn grief into purpose has become a vital lifeline for active-duty service members, veterans, and first responders navigating Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI).

What It Means to Gig Harbor

Gig Harbor is home to many active military, veteran, and first responder families. Race for a Soldier gives our community a tangible way to say: We stand with you, and you don’t have to carry this alone.

On race weekend, local businesses, youth groups, and neighbors line the course with flags and cheer stations. Beyond the event itself, the foundation’s emphasis on growth and recovery helps shift the conversation around mental health across our entire town – replacing stigma with understanding and active support.

Down on the docks, life usually revolves around tides, boat maintenance, and maritime traditions. But at its heart, our marina is about community.

The harbor has long been a place where people find peace, reflection, and connection on the water. Supporting the well-being of the brave men and women who serve our nation and local communities is a natural extension of that spirit. Whether through running, volunteering, or helping spread the word on the docks, we are proud to support the mission of the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation.

There is a role for everyone: you might be surprised by the many different ways you can show up to support our heroes. However you choose to show up this year, your support changes lives right here in our hometown. Let’s line the streets, rally around our heroes, and show what Gig Harbor is all about.
