The sweet life indeed. “La dolce vita” also means the clean life for us at Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard as we enjoy our recent Clean Boatyard designation by the Clean Boating Foundation.
We are proud to have earned this certification as a boatyard that respects the marine environment and strives to be a conscientious steward of it. Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard was awarded Clean Boatyard certification by the Seattle-based foundation at the end of May.
Peter Schrappen, executive director of the Clean Boating Foundation, sent the following letter to Mark Lindeman, boatyard manager:
“Thanks for taking part in the Clean Boating Foundation’s Clean Boatyard Program. We are pleased to extend our Clean Boatyard certification to Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard in recognition of its commitment to environmental responsibility and its achievement in restoring the health of Puget Sound.”
The checklist of environmentally safe practices for Clean Boatyard status includes:
- Pressure washing water run-off management
- Bottom paint removal
- Storm water discharge
- Anti freeze, refrigerant and anode treatment
- Chemicals management
According to the Clean Boating Foundation website:
The Clean Boating Foundation is…
“Working toward cleaner waters in Washington State. Partnering with boaters, boatyards, environmental groups, the Washington State Department of Ecology and scientific experts, CBF is a voluntary, market-driven effort to improve Puget Sound and the rest of our waters.
“We encourage boaters to choose environmentally-preferable products and practices and to use certified Clean Boatyards. We work with Washington boatyards to go above and beyond their legal requirements and we showcase those businesses that act as true stewards of the environment.”
